A local collector has a punt gun that we occasionally fire. The bore diameter is around 1.5 inches, and the barrel is a little less than 4.75 feet. The overall length is almost 6 feet. It used a device similar to an over built oar lock to fix it to the gun rail of a boat. A lanyard was used to fire it. When it was fired, it would cause the wooden fishing boat to slightly spin. Reloading required two people, and took several minutes to reload. We used a very light load of 3 oz. of shot, 200 grains of 2F blackpowder, newspaper wadding and a standard musket cap. The pattern is inconsistent with the range almost equivalent to a modern shotgun. About the only advantage it had over a modern shotgun was the amount of shot it could thrown out. The disadvantages were its weight and the difficulties in reloading and aiming.
