Thick fog causes a Chain Reaction Accidents in the Cajon Pass Sunday Morning

CAJON PASS, CA. (Pain In The Pass) >> Thick fog on Sunday morning on Interstate 15 at the top of the Cajon Pass caused several multi-vehicle accidents that temporarily closed northbound lanes Sunday morning.

The first collision was reported about 8:42 am on Sunday, September 15, 2024. According to the California Highway Patrol, a thick layer of fog covered the top portion of Cajon Pass northbound I-15, about a mile before the Oak Hill Road exit. The low clouds with light drizzle caused extremely poor visibility.

Vehicles started to slow down quickly and personal and commercial vehicles began to run into each other. This caused a chain reaction involving approximately 10 vehicles. In total there were three separate collisions.

CHP and San Bernardino County Fire Department were assisting those trapped after an unknown number of injuries were reported by good Samaritans. Emergency responders were on the scene to help the injured out of their vehicles, as CHP stopped all northbound lanes.

It’s unknown how many people were hospitalized and transported via ambulance or personal vehicles. It was reported there were multiple people with minor injuries in the three separate collisions. CHP also said that one driver was reported to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Northbound I-15 was closed for nearly over an hour, which allowed for emergency responders and tow trucks to assist those involved and to help clear the scene.
