Derek Carr and the the Saints look to be on a roll as they put a beat down on the Cowboys in Dallas. Whereas the Carolina Panthers just look lost as their offense continues to struggle. So here are a few more quick thoughts on NFL Week 2 Sunday action.

Raiders @ Ravens – It looked like the Ravens had everything in hand as they held a ten point lead in the fourth quarter. But the Raiders stormed back with three consecutive scoring drives. Gardner Minshew connected on 30 of 38 passes but didn’t crack 300 yards finishing with 276. Which just proves that it doesn’t matter how many yards a quarterback tallies in a game. The Raiders offense came alive in the fourth quarter and snatched a win from the Ravens.

Chargers @ Panthers – Despite making mistakes of their own, the Chargers’ offense ran circles around the Panthers’ offense. The Panther’s defense created some turnovers like the interception they picked off in the first quarter. That was definitely a pass Justin Herbert would like to have back. But the Panthers’ defense wasn’t good enough to overcome the lack of offense. They just managed 159 total yards, and were 1-of-12 on third-down conversions. Head coach Dave Canales has some work to do.

Saints @ Dallas – RB Alvin Kamara scored 4 touchdowns for the Saints as they routed Dallas exposing their defense. The Saints scored touchdowns on all five of their first-half drives. Safety Tyrann Matthieu temporarily left the game but returned in the fourth quarter and made an interception. This loss ended Dallas’ 16-game home winning streak. They fell behind early and couldn’t overcome the Saints explosive offense.

Quick Thoughts On NFL Week 2 Sunday Action

Buccaneers @ Lions – Head coach Dan Campbell took responsibility for the Lions’ loss to the Buccaneers. At the end of the first half there was a mix-up with the offense and field goal unit. There was confusion as to whether they were going to spike the ball and stop the clock or rush the field goal unit on for the kick. They were penalized for too many men on the field and incurred a 10 second run off the clock leaving no time left in the half. So they missed out on a field goal opportunity. The final score was 20-16 so the error was costly.

Colts @ Packers – Without their starting QB Jordan Love the Green Bay Packers defeated the Indianapolis Colts. The Packers relied on their running game primarily with Josh Jacobs doing the heavy lifting. QB Malik Willis just arrived in Green Bay via trade 19 days ago. Which is why running the ball was the game plan and it worked. The Packers ran the ball 53 times for 261 yards. All but 24 of those rushing yards came in the first half on 34 attempts, a 7.0 average. The Colts still hung in there but failed to complete a 59 yard hail Mary pass at the end of the game.

Browns @ Jaguars – After a tough loss to the Saints last week the Jaguars were looking to bounce back this week. Especially with the stadium being renamed to TreverBank stadium for their home opener. But the Browns rallied around DeShaun Watson and came away with the victory. QB Trevor Lawrence fared better in the second half but it was too late. Like the Colts, another failed hail Mary prevented the Jaguars from taking the victory, losing 18-13.

Additional Sunday Early Game Notes

49ers @ Vikings – QB Sam Darnold and WR Justin Jefferson connected on a ridiculous 97 yard touchdown in the second quarter. The 49ers offense committed too many turnovers. Their defense created some turnovers of their own including an interception from Fred Warner resulting in a touchdown for the 49ers. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the Vikings, losing 23-17.

Seahawks @ Patriots – The Patriots defense had been the bright spot of the team but they weren’t clicking today. There were breakdowns in communications among the DB’s. And a costly defensive pass interference penalty led to a touchdown for the Seahawks. The Seahawks couldn’t get their running game going so QB Geno Smith stepped up leading the touchdown drive to send the game into overtime. The Seahawks kicked the winning field goal in overtime, 23-20.

Jets @ Titans – The Titans kept shooting themselves in the foot making mistakes that cost them the game. They had a pair of turnovers and another special teams blunder (blocked punt). And those mistakes came back to haunt them, taking points off the board. The Titans defense played well for stretches but ultimately gave up three touchdown-scoring drives of 70-plus yards by the Jets. Aaron Rodgers led his team on the go ahead scoring drive winning the game 24-17.

Giants @ Commanders – QB Jayden Daniels improved this week throwing accurately and spreading the ball around. However, the real star for the Commanders was kicker Austin Seibert. He provided all of the points for his team with seven field goals. The Giants’ front seven was a massive challenge. But the bad news is that the Giants scored three touchdowns, allowed zero touchdowns, and still lost the game. Only the second time in NFL history that has happened.

Later Afternoon Sunday Game Action

Rams @ Cardinals – Another blowout loss on Sunday occurred in Arizona. The Cardinals shellacked the Los Angeles Rams 10-41. WR Marvin Harrison Jr. scored his first NFL touchdown on their opening drive. And QB Kyler Dugger finished with a perfect passer rating. Rams’ WR Cooper Kupp left the game with an ankle injury and didn’t return. The Rams opened the game with a turnover on downs and punted several times. Whereas the Cardinals kept scoring in every way possible it seemed.

Steelers @ Broncos – The Steel Curtain is still closed. They had a shut out going for more than three quarters with a swarming defensive effort. Justin Wilson started again in place of Russell Wilson and played a respectable game. Two Steelers’ potential scoring drives were killed by two holding penalties on Broderick Jones. On the other hand, Bronco’s rookie QB Bo Nix was harassed by the Steelers’s defense throwing 2 interceptions during the game. The Steelers’ went on the road again this week and got the 13-6 victory.

Bengals @ Chiefs – The Bengals had been in complete control of the game until they took a page out of the Titans’ handbook. Mahomes had heaved a desperation throw but Daijahn Anthony committed a penalty that put the Chiefs in field goal range. Joe Burrow was sacked and fumbled the ball which the Chiefs returned for a touchdown. They had a chance to run out the clock in the fourth quarter but Burrow was sacked again and they had to punt. The Chiefs had plenty of time to get into field goal range and they won the game 25-26. Mistakes are game killers.

Late Sunday Game Notes

Bears @ Texans – It was a defensive slugfest in Houston along with some fighting on the sidelines. Both CJ Stroud and Caleb Williams were battered and bruised all night long. And neither team could mount much of a running game. However, CJ Stroud made a few connections with his trusted receiver Nico Collins that helped them to score some points. Caleb Williams managed to keep his composure despite getting sacked and throwing a couple interceptions. He’ll need more protection to survive this season.
