Michigan State Police Officer Fatally Injured in Highway Crash

In a devastating incident on September 13, 2024, Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter of the Michigan State Police (MSP) was critically injured while conducting a routine traffic stop on Northbound I-75 near Dix in Lincoln Park. The accident occurred when a Ford Explorer collided with the median wall and continued down the freeway, crashing into Officer Kerstetter’s patrol vehicle, which was subsequently pushed into a semi-truck. Officer Kerstetter, 45, who was wearing his seatbelt and seated in his patrol car, sustained severe injuries and will be removed from life support as his family prepares for organ donation.

Officer Kerstetter, who joined the MSP in January 2023 and graduated from the 26th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School in May 2023, was assigned to the Metro North Post. He is survived by his wife and three children. The driver of the Ford Explorer did not survive the crash, while the semi-truck driver was unharmed. The incident remains under investigation as authorities seek to understand the full circumstances surrounding the tragic collision.

A Dedicated Officer and Family Man

Officer Kerstetter’s commitment to public service was recognized by his colleagues and superiors alike. “We are heartbroken for this loss,” said Colonel James F. Grady II, Director of the MSP. “Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our motor carrier officers and troopers to keeping the public safe on our roadways is commendable and honorable. With the decision to give the gift of life, even in his death, MC Officer Kerstetter is serving others.”

The MSP, along with Officer Kerstetter’s family, has received an outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies and community members across the state. The accident underscores the inherent risks faced daily by those in uniform, particularly those involved in traffic enforcement—a perilous and often thankless job.

A Grim Reminder of the Dangers of Traffic Enforcement

The tragedy of Officer Kerstetter’s death highlights the unique challenges and dangers that law enforcement officers encounter while performing traffic stops. As a member of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Officer Kerstetter’s role involved enforcing traffic safety laws on commercial vehicles, ensuring the protection of infrastructure through aggressive size and weight enforcement, conducting inspections, and contributing to homeland security by regulating hazardous materials.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical need for public awareness and caution when approaching emergency vehicles and roadside law enforcement activities. The MSP continues to stress the importance of the "Move Over" law, which requires drivers to slow down and, if possible, change lanes to provide a buffer for emergency responders working on the roadside.

Community Mourning and Law Enforcement Solidarity

As the investigation into the crash progresses, the MSP has expressed gratitude to its many police partners and emergency responders who assisted at the scene. Special thanks were extended to the medical professionals at Detroit Receiving Hospital for their efforts in caring for Officer Kerstetter. The department has vowed to support Officer Kerstetter’s family during this difficult time, reflecting the close-knit nature of the law enforcement community.

The loss of Officer Kerstetter is not only a personal tragedy for his family but also a significant blow to the MSP and the wider community he served. The continued dedication and bravery of officers like Kerstetter—despite the life-threatening risks they face—remain a critical component of public safety efforts across Michigan and the nation.
