Neymar hints Liverpool may have dodged Kylian Mbappe transfer bullet - 'It was hell'

Brazil star Neymar has reportedly told his international teammates Kylian Mbappe is a nightmare to deal with .

Back in the summer of 2017, Paris Saint-Germain became the story of the world soccer when they bought Neymar from Barcelona, and Mbappe, fresh off helping Monaco to an incredible Ligue 1 title at just 18-years-old. The Parisian's combined forked out an astonishing $458million (€222m/£198m for Neymar and $195.4m/£166m for Mbappe) on the duo, who helped PSG to win five titles during their time together.

However, come the summer of 2023, PSG opted to sell Neymar to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for $98.6m (£86.3m) after the failed experiment of putting the Brazilian, Lionel Messi and Mbappe, who Liverpool reportedly came close to signing in 2022 , into the same side failed to win them the Champions League.

They let Neymar move to Saudi Arabia, whilst Messi left Paris when his contract ended, opting to move to the MLS to join David Beckham's Inter Miami, leaving Mbappe the lone survivor of the trio. The Frenchman played one more year with PSG before leaving them to join Real Madrid this past summer, in a move that has seen him link up with Neymar's Brazilian teammates, Eder Militao, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Eder Militao.

However, despite the match-up on paper looking like a perfect one between Mbappe and Real Madrid, Neymar has reportedly told his international colleagues it was hell working alongside the France captain. Speaking on Europe 1 , journalist Cyril Hanouna claimed the Al-Hilal star has sent "the Brazilians" a note about how "catastrophic" their time at PSG was.

"The Brazilians [at Real Madrid] are friends with Neymar," Hanouna said. "It has always been a war between Neymar and Mbappe. Neymar has sent a paper about Mbappe to the Brazilians, telling them that it was catastrophic, that it was hell."

Previously, Mbappe had described the relationship between he and Neymar as 'hot and cold'. "We have always had a relationship based on respect, but we’ve always had hotter and colder moments," Mbappe said back in September 2022.

"There are periods where, as you see, we are the best friends in the world and other periods where we speak less. It’s the nature of our relationship, but there is a lot of respect. I have a lot of respect for the player that he is, what he represents and the importance that he has in our team. When you have two players with strong personalities like that, life isn’t linear."

Recently, there has been plenty of talk about how Liverpool attempted to land Mbappe back in 2022 when it looked as though he was ready to leave PSG, only for him to end up inking a two-year extension which he immediately regretted. The Reds reportedly tabled a bid of $220m (£168m) for Mbappe, who would have joined the Reds after personal terms had been agreed.

However, PSG decided the bid was too low, quoting Liverpool double their initial offer which caused the Reds to walk away. And if the 'hellish' environment Neymar paints of working with Mbappe is true, then Liverpool may have dodged a transfer bullet.

Liverpool.com says: "There's no 'I' in team. There is however an 'I' in 'Kylian', which is potentially the problem Liverpool may have had to deal with had they landed Mbappe back in 2022. Of course, there's every chance that had Liverpool signed the Frenchman back in 2017, when they wanted to sign him from Monaco, Mbappe might have gone on to become a more rounded team player, rather than being able to operate how he wanted to do whilst at PSG."
