One of Britain's longest-married couples have celebrated their 100th birthdays together - after 78 YEARS of being wed.

Peter Taylor marked the incredible milestone this year on April 11 while wife Peggie turned 100 on August 26 - 80 years after they met in a bar.

Born in 1924, the centenarian couple first laid eyes on each other at Kettell's cocktail bar in Crewe, Cheshire, in 1944 and now have 17 great-grandchildren.

Peggie and Peter celebrated their milestone birthdays with their family and friends eight decades on from their chance encounter on a night out.

Peter told Nub News: "We have had a tremendously happy few weeks celebrating our birthdays with family, friends and neighbors. A quite emotional time."

The Taylors, who are still both in good health, attribute their longevity to a "life full of simple joys and mutual respect".

The pair are one of Britain's oldest couples, but are pipped to the post by Dorothy Walter, 103, and husband Tim, 102, who wed over 80 years ago.

Peter, who is originally from Hellifield, North Yorks., moved to Crewe when he was a child and so did Peggie, who is originally from Prees Heath, Shropshire.

During World War Two, Peter was in the RAF as Air Crew, flying Lancaster bombers and Peggie was a 'land girl' in the Women's Land Army.

Peter was a primary school headteacher before retiring and is also life president of South West Cheshire Scouts.

The pair have lived through 25 prime ministers, six monarchs and survived a world war and a global pandemic.
