The Los Angeles Lakers have made the notable decision to waive Blake Hinson, a former standout at the University of Pittsburgh. According to reports , the move opens up a spot as the Lakers look to fill their roster strategically amid evolving team dynamics. Hinson's tenure with the Lakers began after he went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, but his journey has been anything but ordinary.

    Hinson's Stellar Collegiate Career

During his time at Pitt, Hinson proved he could be a significant scoring force, averaging an impressive 18.8 points per game and shooting 42.1% from three-point range in his final season. His ability to hit the long ball was particularly evident when he set a program record with 110 three-pointers in a single season. Additionally, Hinson had standout performances, including scoring 41 points against Louisville, solidifying himself as a primary offensive weapon.

Even after going undrafted, enthusiasm from the Lakers regarding Hinson's skill set led to a two-way contract. His performances in the NBA Summer League demonstrated his potential, especially a notable game where he scored 25 points against the Chicago Bulls. However, despite some flashes of brilliance, Hinson’s inconsistency during the Summer League—where he struggled with shooting—ultimately influenced the team's decision to release him.

Coaches Praise Commitment to the Game

Head coach Jeff Capel of Pitt expressed gratitude for the connection Hinson maintained with the program, saying, "this is your place," as he reflected on Hinson's return to practice with his former teammates following his stint in the Summer League. This bond highlights the community spirit that is crucial within college basketball programs, echoing the sentiments of many coaches who value former players' involvement.

Hinson's efforts left a legacy at Pitt that showcased not only his scoring abilities but also his dedication to supporting current players. Capel noted that Hinson's example set a precedent for future generations on the importance of maintaining ties with the program.

    Future Outlook for Hinson

While the Lakers' decision may seem abrupt, it aligns with their strategy to build a more balanced and versatile roster. The signing of Christian Koloko is expected to bring depth to the frontcourt—an area where the Lakers needed to bolster their lineup. Hinson’s shooting prowess initially brought him into the spotlight, yet the team's evaluation ultimately revealed a need for players who could contribute consistently across various facets of the game.

Blake Hinson's departure from the Lakers may just be the beginning of a new chapter in his basketball career. As he enters free agency, it's likely that his scoring ability and previous accolades at Pitt will attract interest from other teams looking to add a sharpshooting talent to their rosters.
