Luke Grimes Says He “Couldn’t Be Happier” About The Yellowstone Season Finale: “Perfect Ending For Every Character”

We're getting closer and closer to the end of Yellowstone . It's a bittersweet feeling, though at the same time, fans have been waiting for a long, long, long time. The first half of season five wrapped up airing in January of 2023, and now the second half of the finale season is set to return in November of 2024. If you do the math, that's
nearly a two year gap. And despite the long pauses in production, the storyline for the show that's followed the chaotic ups and downs of the Dutton family has always stayed strong and kept the fans in mind. As executive producer David Glasser told Entertainment Weekly , the non-stop drama and action offered by Yellowstone throughout its five season run has always benefited from Taylor Sheridan knowing how he wanted to wrap the story up: "Day one, episode one, Taylor said, 'I know exactly how this ends.'" And Sheridan confirmed as much years ago. He said in an interview from back in 2021 that he already knew the ending and was working towards reaching that. He also confirmed that the show wouldn't run on for 10 seasons just because it was popular:
“Well, I know how it ends. I’m writing to that ending. There’s only so much hovering one can do before the story starts to lose its locomotion; you can’t put it in neutral just because it’s successful. It will go as many years as it takes for me to tell the story, but you’re not going to see nine seasons of it. No way.” So Sheridan has just been getting from point A to point B this entire time I suppose? And Kelly Reilly - who plays the incomparable Beth Dutton in the show - says that though fans might be upset that the finale is happening sooner than they wished, Yellowstone has always been destined for a five season arc: "It was always going to be five seasons in (Taylor’s) head, but because the show became so successful, the network and everyone wanted more. So in a way, fate took it and we ended this part of Yellowstone in a way that he always envisioned it to end.”
Fate eventually allowed production to begin again in May of this year, though there was a noticeable absence of John Dutton himself - Kevin Costner. Many fans are left eagerly awaiting how the show will handle the exit (or death?) of Costner's character, since he ultimately decided not to come back ( or did he? ) Reilly, the actress behind Costner's on-screen daughter, says that Beth will still be one of John Dutton's right-hand-women, even if the patriarch isn't there on screen: "She’s his most loyal soldier. It is unwavering, her devotion to protecting this place, even if it's a place that has caused her so much sadness in her life. She's always foreseen Jamie as the biggest threat to its survival and I think there is a fulfilling of a prophecy happening here. She ended the last episode saying we’re at war. She keeps her promise. It changes nothing as far as Beth's desire to protect her family's lineage. In fact it becomes more urgent."
As for other storylines that are set to be wrapped up in the back half of season five, Luke Grimes (who plays Kayce) teases that he and Reilly will finally share more scenes in the show. With Beth Dutton declaring war on her brother Jamie in the first half of season five, there were bound to be some more interaction between Kayce and Beth, as Grimes explained: "You do get to see a lot more interaction between Kayce and Beth. That was really fun because Kelly and I had talked over the years about how we wish we'd had more stuff together because we're never really in the same room, if you think about it. It was great working with Kelly and being around Beth’s energy a little bit.” According to Reilly, though the long gap in-between parts one and two of season five has left fans eagerly anticipating what's to come (and at some points wondering if the show would ever come back), the delays were a blessing in disguise. She insists that the scripts benefited from having extra time to marinate, and got all of those involved in the right mindset to come back to the show and finish things the right way. Grimes added some praise about the series finale. He had high praise for Taylor Sheridan's writing and how things wrap up for all of the characters:
"I read the last episode the day before we started filming. I couldn't be happier. I think it's a perfect ending for the show for every character. It's just a testament to what a good writer Taylor is, and it's a very, very profound, beautiful ending. I can't wait to sit down and watch it one day.” And though it might be the "perfect ending," don't even think for a second that it'll be one that you can predict, as David Glasser proclaimed: “If you think you know what's going to happen, Taylor will always give you a surprise that you didn't see coming.” You can get fired up for the final six episodes of Yellowstone by watching the "Season 5 Part 2" teaser that was released a couple of weeks ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srE5QtvtipA And if you're a fan of the hit series Yellowstone, be sure to check out our
