STANLEY, Va. – The Stanley Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) battled a massive structure fire early Friday morning.

According to an emailed media release from Stanley Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit, the incident occurred September 13, 2024.

At approximately 12:42 a.m., the SVFD responded to 1087 Judy Lane.

Firefighters were on the scene within six minutes. When they arrived, flames at one end of the house were clearly visible.

Six SVFD units and 17 crew members responded to the call, and it took about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.

A preliminary investigation showed that the blaze started in a bedroom ceiling and quickly spread into the attic. The structure, owned by Gary Cubbage of Stanley, suffered approximately $100,000 in damage.

Tenants Christian and Sarah Rivera and their son were at a local hospital due to a medical emergency at the time of the incident.

The house was insured by both owner and occupants.

Crews remained on scene for three hours to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.

The Luray Fire Department was called to assist with covering calls at the Stanley station. Page County EMS also responded with one unit and crew. The Page County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control.

Judy Lane was totally blocked by fire apparatus, and nearby East Main Street (340) was partially blocked for nearly two hours due to hose lines connected to fire hydrants.

No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross is assisting the Rivera’s with temporary living arrangements.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
