The Town of Palm Beach is warning about a new scam involving QR codes.

This new scam is known as "brushing" and involves receiving an unexpected gift or package in the mail with a QR code attached. The town says the package will not have the sender's information. Officials say that when the package is opened there will be a QR code attached that advises the recipient to scan it to find out who sent the gift.

If the code is scanned, the recipient can unknowingly send information to a scammer, compromise their phone or be directed to a malicious website.

Residents are advised to just throw away the item, but don't scan the code. You can also reach out to Palm Beach Police at 561-838-5454.
