    11-year-old killed in NYC subway surfing mishap as rider’s head strikes beam: sources

    An 11-year-old was killed in a subway surfing mishap when the child was struck by a low beam while the train pulled into a Brooklyn station Monday morning, according to law enforcement sources.

    The boy was riding on top of a G train as it came into Smith-Ninth Street Station around 10:15 a.m.,, sources said.

    Responders were seen gathered on the tracks beneath a trestle stretching over the station entrance, with a stretcher nearby.

    Service was severely disrupted on the subway line as police investigated the accident, with trains halted between the Bedford-Nostrand and Church Avenue stations, according to the MTA.

    It was just the latest fatality in the alarming trend of teenage subway riders often shooting their dangerous exploits for viral social media videos. The reckless stunts have now claimed at least six lives so far this year.

    In July, a 15-year-old was killed while subway surfing in the Rockaways.

    Then in June two teens were injured — one fatally — while subway surfing on the same day.

    Earlier in June, a 14-year-old was hurt in Queens after also striking his head on a beam while entering a station.

    At least five people were killed subway surfing in 2023, while reports of the incident reached well into the hundreds.

    The trend has prompted state and city leaders to launch a public information campaign to educate teens about its dangers, but incidents appear to be increasing over last year, according to NYPD data.
