New bill proposes matching Citi Bike cost with fare for a subway ride

New York City — "Are electric Citi Bike fees too damn high for New Yorkers?" Stephen Nessen asked, in his latest article.

Nessen's concern that Citi Bikes are becoming too expensive for most New Yorkers explains why the City Council proposed a bill that'll make renting a Citi Bike competitive with the cost of a subway ride.

Under the new bill, Citi Bike can't charge anyone more than the base fare of a subway ride to use an e-bike for up to an hour or a regular bike for up to two hours.

“It shouldn’t cost any more to take the subway than it should to ride a bike. It’s that simple," Councilman Lincoln Restler said. "Bike share is an essential part of the New York City transit landscape. We need to make it affordable and accessible to all."
