Top Queer And Black Women Moments At This Year’s Emmys

This year’s Emmy Awards proudly dawned the most diverse list of nominees in its history. From LGBTQ+ talent to Black women, the world witnessed so many deserving artists finally get recognized for their work. While there is still a long way to go, it instills hope that marginalized voices will continue to have their story told. And as Viola Davis demanded in her unforgettable 2015 acceptance speech, the opportunities must come as well.

Whether it was their big win or an unforgettable red carpet slay, here’s a round-up of some of those shining moments from Black and queer stars at the 2024 Emmys.

Quinta Brunson

Nominated three times for her role starring in, executive producing and writing “Abbot Elementary,” Quinta Brunson donned a stunning Georges Chakra gown on the red carpet. The show that altogether earned nine Emmy nominations, a deeply inspiring feat for any content creator willing to invest in their big screen dreams.

Nava Mau

Nava Mau served as the first trans actress nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series for her role in “Baby Reindeer.” She celebrated this historical moment by sharing a long embrace with Laverne Cox, who made a similar feat in 2014 as the first trans person to ever earn an acting nomination for her role in “Orange is the New Black.”

Liza Colón-Zayas

One of the first awards of the night, Liza Colón-Zayas took home Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as Tina Marrero in “The Bear.” The first Latina actress to win in this category, she made Emmy history while concluding her gracious acceptance speech with “To all the Latinas looking at me: keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph

Sheryl Lee Ralph attended the show alongside her proud children. The actress hit the carpet with a clean and elegant Versace look. She celebrated amongst her “Abbott Elementary” cast as their show continued to pile on a historic amount of nominations.

Ayo Edebiri

Having won big at the last Emmy awards, Ayo Edebiri was happy to cheer on her cast mates during this year’s award ceremony. She looked stunning in a custom Bottega Veneta strapless sequined gown, which she mentioned gave her “Nollywood vibes.” Though she didn’t win her nomination this year for her role in “The Bear,” she’ll certainly be up for the award again.

Nicole Beharie

Though she’s done outstanding in every role she’s played, Nicole Beharie was a first-time Emmy nominee this year. While she didn’t win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a drama series for her role in “The Morning Show,” this proves that the academy sees her and won’t look away now.
