Police respond to St. Clair County school on Monday after sound of lockers slamming is mistaken for gunshots

MEMPHIS, Mich. (WWJ) -- A shooting scare at a St. Clair County school on Monday turned out to be a false alarm.

According to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, a parent called 911 and reported possible gunshots at Memphis Junior/Senior High School in Memphis.

The sound was heard by the parent who was on the phone with a student, the sheriff's office said. The school resource officer, St. Clair County deputies and Michigan State Police all responded to the school — and it was determined the sound was from lockers slamming shut.

After determining there was no threat to students or staff, classes resumed as normal for the day.

Memphis, Michigan is a city of fewer than 1,100 people, northeast of Armada, at the border of St. Clair and Macomb counties.

This incident comes a couple of weeks after a deadly mass shooting at a Georgia High school , and amidst a rash of copycat threats at local school in Metro Detroit .
