Chiefs give the ultimate cold shower to player who went viral for coming to defense of Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs have one available roster spot and another on the way when RB Isiah Pacheco heads to injured reserve. It appears they'll now have a third open roster spot after a recent roster move.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are waiving TE Peyton Hendershot. This comes just weeks after the team traded a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft to acquire Hendershot from the Dallas Cowboys during 53-man roster cuts.

It also comes after Hendeshot cost the Chiefs $100K and was fined himself for sideline shove of Baltimore Ravens LB Roquan Smith while he was inactive.

Most fans were OK with the sideline situation because they felt Hendershot was standing up for Patrick Mahomes on what appeared to be a late hit out of bounds. Smith was not fined for this play upon review by the league office. Still, this has to be a bit of a cold shower for Hendershot, after the back-to-back world champions traded to acquire you.

Hendershot made his 2024 NFL debut with the Chiefs in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He played just seven snaps on special teams during the game. Perhaps Hendershot will return to Kansas City on the practice squad in the coming days or they could have something else in mind. It's entirely possible that they made this move simply to ensure the conditional pick they traded to Dallas didn't lock in.

There's little doubt that this is a strange move for Kansas City. They'll likely have three roster spaces available, with one of those spots likely reserved for whoever happens to impress during tryouts on Tuesday. What the team will do with the other roster spots: One vacated by RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and another WR Hollywood Brown, remains to be seen.

Each of Edwards-Helaire, Charles Omenihu, and BJ Thompson cannot return to the 53-man roster until Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season.
