WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A man and a woman were killed Monday morning in White Plains after the Tesla they were traveling in hit a curb, then a tree, then an apartment building, engulfing the electric vehicle in flames, officials said of its initial findings.

The victims' bodies were both badly burned, said White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong. The victims were identified as Millie Sheehan, 70, believed to be the driver, and Diana Sheehan, 36, believed to be Millie's sister-in-law. Both are residents of Hartsdale, also located in Westchester County.

A White Plains police officer was waved down around 9:10 a.m. regarding a vehicle accident at 295 Battle Avenue, a residential multiple-dwelling apartment building.

The car and the building caught on fire, and as cops were removing the vehicle, it exploded.

Two residents of the building suffered minor injuries but were treated and released.

A passer-by was hit by shrapnel and is in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing and the the cause of the accident is being determined.
