After a 0-2 start to the 2024 NFL season, the Carolina Panthers decided to bench second-year quarterback Bryce Young on Monday, September 16.

The move came after consecutive underwhelming performances by Young, as the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick completed 55.4% of his passes for 245 yards, three interceptions and only 10 first downs gained against the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers.

Demands to bench the 23-year-old skyrocketed on social media on Sunday. Still, head coach Dave Canales confirmed to reporters after the game that "Bryce is our quarterback."

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz , Young and his camp were left stunned by the suddenness of Carolina's move on Monday.

"Sources: #Panthers QB Bryce Young and those close to him were 'very shocked' at the organization’s decision to bench him this morning," Schultz wrote on X. "'It came out of nowhere,' one source said. Safe to say no one anticipated the plug being pulled after just two games with a new coaching staff."

The Panthers will roll with 36-year-old Andy Dalton under center in Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders. His last start came for the Panthers in Week 3 of last season, his only start in 2023.

"This is the best decision for our team going forward," said Canales.
