Alex Cora, Red Sox reportedly facing discipline from MLB for throwing at Aaron Judge

Alex Cora and the Red Sox reportedly might find themselves in hot water after Boston’s manager seemingly admitted that his team tried to intentionally hit Yankees star Aaron Judge with a pitch during a drama-filled game in The Bronx on Saturday.

According to Mark Sanchez of The New York Post, MLB is currently investigating Cora’s comments — which signaled that Boston was purposely throwing at Judge during the sixth inning of that game.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole raised the temperature of Saturday’s game off the bat when he drilled Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers with a pitch in the first inning.

Devers has dominated in matchups against Cole over the years, with the Red Sox third baseman batting .350 in 40 at-bats against Cole with a whopping eight home runs and 20 RBI.

With Cole seemingly negating Devers by plunking and later walking him, Red Sox starter Brayan Bello later threw behind Judge — the frontrunner for AL MVP — in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Devers and the Red Sox got the last laugh against Cole and the Yankees, with Devers later driving in two runs off a base-loaded single against the New York ace in the fifth inning en route to a 7-1 win.

Still, Cora did not hold back after Saturday’s win when asked about Cole’s decision to both hit Devers and then intentionally walk him with the bases empty.

“I wasn’t surprised at all because I felt like the first at-bat, he hit him on purpose. He doesn’t wanna face him. That’s the bottom line. He told us with the intentional walk, that he first at-bat he hit him,” Cora said of Cole. “We took exception to that because it has been clear he didn’t want to face him, so that first at-bat, now after the intentional walk, we were like, ‘OK. That’s what happened.’

Following Sunday’s series finale against New York, Cora was blunt when asked whether or not the beef between the Red Sox and Yankees was settled.

“It was closed yesterday, like around the sixth inning,” Cora told Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, referencing Bello’s attempted plunking of Judge. “So, you know, we had our chance. Didn’t happen, and we have to move on.”

Cora’s comments signaling intent on throwing at Judge are the ones reportedly under investigation by MLB — with Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressing displeasure about Cora’s remarks after Sunday’s game.

“Yeah, that’s not allowed,” Boone said. “So that’s for somebody else to deal with. So we’re finished playing with them for now. We’re on to Seattle. Obviously, you can’t do that.”

Judge opted to take the high road when asked about the Red Sox’ potential intent in hitting him with a pitch, but did manage to land a jab in at Bello’s accuracy.

“I’ve been playing this game for a while,” said the Yankee captain. “Things like that happen. I know they’re upset. I think three other guys got it that day, and I think they’re just protecting their players. So something’s got to happen and that’s the way this game kind of gets policed, and has been policed for 100 years. So the biggest thing is don’t miss when you do it.”

Sunday marked the final time that the Red Sox and Yankees will face off during the 2024 season, so any hostilities will need to be tabled for now. But that won’t stop MLB from potentially stepping in if the league sees fit.
