( NewsNation ) — Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., told “ NewsNation Now ” the perimeter at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, should have been reinforced by barricades if it was accessible to the public, a lesson learned during the Butler, Pennsylvania shooting.

Both assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump had unprotected or unpatrolled perimeters that allowed potential shooters to get within range of the politician.

Cellphone records show that Ryan Wesley Routh , the would-be assassin who was arrested Sunday, was stationed near the fence of the golf course for nearly 12 hours .

Who is Ronald Rowe, acting director of the Secret Service?

“As a protectee, [Trump] should not be within range of a high-powered weapon from the public who could just come right up to the fence line,” Krishnamoorthi said.

He told NewsNation it’s a lesson that should’ve been learned after a 20-year-old gunman climbed atop an unsecured roof and shot at the former president in July, grazing his ear and killing a rallygoer.

“I’ll just be very upfront with you, you know, I don’t know that we’ve learned the lessons of Butler. … There’s 50 days left , and we have everything we can to protect Donald Trump, Kamala Harris , Joe Biden, everyone from any harm,” he added.
