    Newport News 13-year-old charged after threats against a middle school in Greensville County

    WRIC 8 News reported that a 13-year-old from Newport News was charged on Monday, September 16 for posting a social media threat against Edward W. Wyatt Middle School in Greensville County on the evening of Thursday, September 12.

    The sheriff’s office explained the connection between the Newport News teenager and the school in Greensville County.

    “The juvenile has known friends that attend the Greensville County Public School system.”

    Because of the threat, all schools in the district were closed on Friday, September 13 as an investigation was launched into the threat and its credibility. After-school activities were also canceled.

    The arrest and charge

    On Monday, September 16, the sheriff’s office arrested the 13-year-old from Newport News. The teenager, who was not identified, was charged with six counts of threats by sending electronic messages to kill or do harm to staff and students at the middle school in Greensville County, according to the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office.

    According to the sheriff’s office, the teenager will be held in juvenile detention until the court date.
