Los Angeles, CA – At the Holocaust Museum LA today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2867 (AB 2867), a groundbreaking law designed to help California residents recover art and personal property stolen during the Holocaust and other instances of political persecution. The legislation, introduced by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, ensures that California law applies to lawsuits involving the recovery of stolen property.

The bill follows a Ninth Circuit Court ruling allowing a Spanish museum to retain a Nazi-stolen masterpiece from the Cassirer family. With AB 2867, California strengthens its commitment to justice for Holocaust survivors and their families. Governor Newsom, joined by survivors’ families, emphasized the moral duty to return stolen items and praised the bill as a victory for justice.
