( NewsNation ) — Bill O’Reilly thinks former President Donald Trump should ask Vice President Kamala Harris to co-sign a letter to the American people after a second assassination attempt on the GOP presidential candidate.

O’Reilly said if he were running the Trump campaign, he would have the former president issue a statement urging Harris to co-sign a message to “tamp down the hatred.”

“Harris would have to do it but it’s Trump driving that,” he told NewsNation’s Leland Vittert on Monday. “If he did that, he would win.”

The call for unity comes a day after a second attempt on Trump’s life in recent months. In July, the former president was shot during a rally in rural Pennsylvania.

O’Reilly thinks Trump should use the incident to turn a new leaf in his campaign. Polling currently shows Harris with a slight lead.

The author and longtime conservative commentator said that for Trump to win, the former president needs to do a better job convincing Americans that he’s looking out for the country, not himself.

“With Trump, it’s all centric, he’s got to look out,” O’Reilly said.

Above all, O’Reilly thinks Trump should double down on issues such as border security and avoid hateful rhetoric.

“When he gets into eating cocker spaniels and ‘I hate Taylor Swift,’ he hurts himself,” O’Reilly said.

In a statement posted to X on Sunday, Harris said she was glad Trump was safe, adding, “ violence has no place in America.”
