It happened at the L Train platform at Van Sinderen and Sutter avenues in Brownsville on Sunday just after three o'clock in the afternoon. The incident began when the two officers allegedly pursued a guy, 37, who had not paid his fee, up the stairs.

After making a verbal threat, the suspect produced a knife from his pocket. According to Maddrey, when the man was ordered to put down his firearm, the suspect insisted that they would have to shoot him.

After tasering the man failed, the altercation went inside a train that had just pulled into the station, where police opened fire.

The suspect, two of the passengers, a 49-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, as well as a 40-year-old cop, were all hit by bullets that flew into the car and onto the platform.

The shot cop was still receiving treatment at Brookdale University Hospital on Monday. Whether the cop was struck by a bullet or a piece that came from his partner's pistol is unknown.

At Kings County Hospital, the 37-year-old suspect is still in critical condition.

The 26-year-old female spectator who was shot in the leg is stable, while the 49-year-old male bystander who was hit in the head is in critical condition.

According to an NYPD official, the suspect was well within the cops' "zone of safety" of twenty-one feet when they opened fire, at a distance of roughly seven feet.

Investigating will be done by the NYPD Force Investigation Division.
