The Department of Homeland Security has set the deadline for all Americans to have a REAL ID by May 7, 2025 to board domestic flights. However, due to low compliance rates, a new proposal suggests a phased approach that could extend the enforcement of REAL ID beyond this date. REAL IDs were introduced as a security standard following the Real ID Act of 2005, requiring a minimum standard for proving identification across states.

REAL IDs are distinguishable by a star in the corner and are necessary for domestic air travel and entry into federal facilities. The current compliance rate is at 56%, leaving many Americans still needing to make the switch. Delays in issuance are anticipated as the deadline approaches, potentially leading to denied entry for travelers without REAL IDs.

The proposed rule offers flexibility for agencies to implement REAL ID compliance gradually, potentially extending the deadline to 2027 for some individuals. This would mark the fourth delay for REAL ID implementation since the Covid-19 pandemic. The phased approach to extending the enforcement of REAL ID beyond the current deadline of May 7, 2025, comes as a response to the low compliance rates across the country. With only 56% of Americans currently holding a REAL ID, the proposal aims to provide more flexibility for individuals and agencies to transition to the new identification standard. This potential shift to a 2027 deadline for some individuals would be the fourth delay in REAL ID implementation, attributable in part to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As travelers face the looming deadline and potential delays in obtaining their REAL IDs, there is growing concern about the impact on domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. Without the necessary identification, individuals risk being denied entry, highlighting the importance of increased efforts to educate the public and streamline the process of obtaining REAL IDs before the extended deadline takes effect.

Can we impeach Bush for putting this in place? This is ridiculous. If 20 years have passed and we still haven't implemented it, everything still is going ok without it. I know he's out of office but the democrats said impeachment doesn't matter if the president is out of office.
