Caitlin Clark has sent her boyfriend Connor McCaffery a loving message after the former Iowa basketball player landed a new job as Thad Matta’s assistant at Butler University in the men's program.

McCaffery had previously worked on the Indiana Pacers ' staff, close to the same team his girlfriend was drafted first overall to earlier this year, the Indiana Fever , and has since stolen headlines and shattered records in the WNBA . "Yayyy!!! So happy for you," Clark said on McCaffery's announcement.

McCaffery will replace former NBA star Greg Oden, a former first-overall NBA Draft pick from 2007. Oden had spent the last two seasons at Butler as Matta's assistant.

"Following a high-level playing career, Connor has had the opportunity to both contribute and learn alongside one of the best staffs in the NBA," Matta said. "Those experiences will be very valuable to our staff. He obviously comes from a basketball family that I know very well and I'm excited for the impact he is going to have on our program both quickly and in the long run."

McCaffery has a long history in basketball, being a former Iowa star himself. However, his dad, Fran McCaffery, has been Iowa’s head coach since 2010 after previous head-coaching stops at Siena and UNC Greensboro.

The former three-star recruit joined forces with his father at the Hawkeyes and played for the college between 2017 and 2023. In his final season with the Hawkeyes, McCaffery was an all-Big Ten honorable mention, and he averaged 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

After leaving college, McCaffery landed a job at the Pacers as a team assistant. Connections between Iowa businessman Kevin Bannister and Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan made the job happen. It’s kind of all-hands on deck, whatever you’re asked to do, be ready to do it,” he said to the Des Moines Register in 2023.

“It’s a way in. It’s an entry-level job. You’ve got to work hard and work your way up. That’s obviously what I want to do.”

He will remain in Indianapolis, though, close to his girlfriend. He began dating Clark in April 2023. Clark has already helped fire the Fever to the postseason, with the regular season coming to a close.

She is averaging 19.5 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game, and she also leads all WNBA players in assists and recently set the WNBA rookie scoring record. Clark managed 761 points in 39 games - asserting herself as one of the league's top on-court stars to match her off-court stardom.
