Ben Roethlisberger reverses course on what Steelers should do at quarterback

After a 2-0 start following a Week 2 win over the Denver Broncos , the debate rages on about what the Pittsburgh Steelers should do at the quarterback position between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.

Wilson was named the starter prior to Week 1 but hasn't been able to play in either of the first two games to start the season because of a calf injury . In his stead, Fields has done just enough to help Pittsburgh to two wins, which has led many to believe Pittsburgh should stick with him, even when Wilson is healthy enough to play.

Others believe that the Steelers should give Wilson the ball when he's ready to go to see what he can do with the same offense. When he'll be ready remains to be seen, though, as a report from Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week stated that Wilson may not be healthy enough to play until Week 4.

Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger was originally on the side of giving the ball to Wilson, but now he thinks Pittsburgh should ride with Fields after a 2-0 start.

“He’s not turning the ball over, they’re 2-0, big test this week with the Chargers coming to town," he said on the Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast . "To me, if Russ is healthy, I’m sticking with Justin. I said it last week I wouldn’t, but what I saw today, I think he has earned and deserves the right to stay there."

The Steelers have already shown their defense is legit and that is obviously going to be the strength of this team in 2024.

But the jury is still out on the offense. Yes, Fields has taken care of the football, but the unit has scored just 31 points over two games and has more rushing yards (278) than passing yards (273). If Pittsburgh wants to hang with the contenders and make some noise this season, the offense has got to produce more.

Assuming he starts, Fields will have a difficult matchup in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers , a team that sports an elite pass-rush duo in Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa.

If Fields thrives and the Steelers win, he may just cement himself atop the depth chart for the foreseeable future. But a poor performance could (and should) send the Steelers in the opposite direction.

Sooner or later our defense is going to get tired and give up a touchdown or 2 and we still have 2 QBs that can’t keep drives going to get in to the end zone enough. 1 TD in 2 games ain’t saying a lot. Will lose every game if our defense gives up 2 TDs
