The Dog Who Never Left His Owner’s Grave Till The Day He Died

Dogs are one of the most loyal companions and humans can never be ungrateful for having dogs in their lives. We know that you must have heard many stories about dogs but some of the real and heart-touching stories have remained in our hearts forever. We have one of such stories that will melt your heart and bring you tears but you will definitely believe in a dog’s love for you and their loyalty.

    John Gray Adopted Bobby

So, the story goes back to the 1850s, when the world was not about the internet and people lived with less connectivity but their hearts were connected and in this story, we get to know how deeply a dog loved its parents. John Gray was a night watchman in Edinburgh, Scotland, and one day he decided to adopt a small Skye Terrier and we must say it was his best decision. John named the dog Bobby and they took no time to form an unbreakable bond and went everywhere together.

There was no doubt that John and Bobby enjoyed being with each other but you know, when everything goes right, something has to happen to make it bad.

    John’s Death and Bobby's Love

That’s what happened in 1858 when, sadly, John Gray died due to tuberculosis and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. But what happens next gathered our faith in love and loyalty because Bobby, John’s dog, did something that no human will do. He never left his beloved John’s side and stayed by his grave and what’s interesting is he stayed there for the next 14 years until he took his last breath.

    Locals Took Care of Bobby

Bobby only left John’s grave when he had to eat and drink something and he went to a nearby cafe. Bobby’s sweet and heartwarming gesture touched people in Edinburgh and they decided to take care of him and make sure he never misses a meal and always has shelter. And you know what was interesting? Edinburgh didn’t allow stray dogs and local laws required stray dogs to be put down but for Bobby, even laws were modified and he was granted special protection because his love and devotion for his beloved owner just melted everyone’s heart.

    Bobby’s Statue Was Built

Bobby died in 1872 and people there buried him near John Gray, where Bobby sat and stayed for 14 years. A statue of Greyfriars Bobby was built in honor of his love, loyalty, and devotion to his beloved owner. The statue stands still even today and has become a symbol of pure devotion that people for ages will never forget.
