Chris Cuomo Reveals He Called Trump After New Assassination Attempt Ashamed By Media Response: ‘Reaction Is Unacceptable’

NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo revealed on Tuesday that he called former President Donald Trump following Secret Service stopping would-be gunman Ryan Wesley-Routh on Friday before the armed man could reach a golfing Trump in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Cuomo accused the media and politicians of downplaying what should be a “cause for panic.” The former CNN host said he was not surprised as he accused the media of shrugging off the first assassination attempt on Trump too.

Cuomo said:

What if it was Kamala Harris or President Biden, God forbid? Do you think it would be almost a shoulder shrug and more talk about the Secret Service and allocation of funds than just how crazy it is that this is what’s happening in our country? That reaction of, well, don’t make too much of it — he had an AK-47 pointed at him! The reaction is unacceptable. And it’s the second time media and political players have gotten away with playing down what should be a cause for panic.

On his phone call to Trump, Cuomo said he did not ask questions as a reporter.

“I didn’t ask him any questions. I didn’t go after him about his role. I just wanted to know how his family’s taking this,” he said, recalling his own feelings as a child fearing for the safety of his father — late New York Gov. Mario Matthew Cuomo .

Cuomo said his phone call was prompted because he was “ashamed” of the collective response to threats against the former president.

“I called him today because I am ashamed of how we are responding and now responding to the threats on him, and I feel for his family, and I know you can roll your eyes and say he asked for it — listen, that’s your choice, and I think it’s a wrong choice. We got to get out of the judgment business unless it’s judging ourselves,” Cuomo said.

He marveled at Trump’s ability to remain in the race but also criticized the former president for “wasted opportunities,” arguing that he’s only leaned into his fiery rhetoric more despite the threats around him that provide opportunities to become more unifying.

“Who better than Trump to say, ‘we can do better,’ ‘I can do better’?” Cuomo said.
