MT. PLEASANT (WWJ) -- An online fundraiser has been set up to help the family of a construction worker killed on a Michigan highway.

Gregory Smith, 47, died last Friday after he was hit by a driver who drove onto a closed portion of US 127 in Mt. Pleasant, and through a construction zone barrier.

The driver is a 66-year-old Detroit man, according to police. He was not arrested, as police continue investigating the crash.

As of Tuesday morning, a little under $5,000 had been raised, toward a $20,000 goal.

According to a message posted to the GoFundMe page , any money collected will go to help Smith's fiancée and their four children.

The message reads: "Greg was so much more than his work; he was a loving fiancé to Hollie and a devoted father to their four beautiful children. His sudden loss has left an unimaginable void in their hearts and homes. Hollie and the kids are now faced with the overwhelming emotional and financial burden of moving forward without him.

"As a family, they no longer get to experience the simple joy of Greg walking through the front door, his face lighting up with love for them. His absence is felt deeply, and the pain of his loss is indescribable. Greg and Hollie's love for each other was the kind that everyone could see. It was in the way they looked at each other, a love that took your breath away.

"In this time of grief, we are asking for your support to help ease some of the financial strain. Any contribution, no matter the size, would make a meaningful difference in helping Hollie and the children through this devastating time as they try to adjust to life without Greg."

Funeral arrangements are still being made.

Anyone who would like to made a donation can do so at this link .
