The upcoming Harry Potter series received several promising updates from Casey Bloys, the Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content. In an interview with Deadline, Bloys revealed that pre-production on the series has begun, with writing and casting underway.

“Writers have started. [Director] Mark Mylod has started,” Bloys said. “The team, they’re hiring department heads, casting, and we’re off.”

Earlier this month, Warner Bros. Television announced an opening casting call in the UK to find the next Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The casting call mentioned that the actors must be between ages 9 and 11 in spring 2025. However, that date does not signal the start of production.

“We haven’t announced any [date],” Bloys said. “I think they were talking about age [the young actors] will be in March; that doesn’t mean necessarily a production start date.”

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav announced plans to launch the Harry Potter series in 2026. Bloys confirmed the release date window but added that it could be pushed back another year.

“Late ’26-’27,” Bloys said when asked about the show’s launch date. “Writers are just getting started, so it’s too soon to talk about airdate.”

Who is Involved in the Harry Potter Series?

In June, Francesca Gardiner was hired as the showrunner and writer of the Harry Potter series. In addition, Mark Mylod was tapped to direct multiple episodes of the Harry Potter series. Gardiner and Mylod both worked on HBO’s award-winning drama Succession.

Each season of the Harry Potter series will adapt one of Rowling’s books: The Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows.

Gardiner and Mylod will executive produce alongside J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman. The series is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
