Mets could target Guardians ace to bolster starting rotation for 2025

The New York Mets cut back on spending last offseason and instead decided to make more frugal moves. However, several of those moves have worked out quite well for the Mets as they lead the race for the final National League Wild Card spot.

This offseason, they could possibly get back to their old spending ways and take a stab at reeling in some of the bigger fish in the pond. They'll need to make some key moves in order to remain on par with the Atlanta Braves and compete with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Perhaps New York could take a look at Cleveland Guardians ace Shane Bieber.

It's important to remember that Bieber is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will not be back immediately in 2025. But that should drive his price down a little and result in him getting a shorter-term deal.

That isn't ideal for him, but the Mets could take advantage of this opportunity to add a true ace to their rotation to slot in next to Kodai Senga. This would also leave room for the Mets to make other big moves and even pursue Juan Soto.

Bieber made only two starts this season before landing on the injured list again and opting for Tommy John surgery. He did not allow an earned run in either of those starts.

The 29-year-old right-hander can be a top-of-the-rotation arm when he's healthy and he showed flashes of that this year. If the Mets take a flyer on his rehab journey, they could potentially reap the rewards later on when he returns to the mound.

We'll see if New York is in the mix for the former Cy Young.
