Roethlisberger thinks Fields should start, even if Wilson is healthy

Justin Fields is the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, at least for now.

Joe Starkey would start Wilson over Fields. LISTEN:

That appears to be the case because Russell Wilson continues to deal with a calf injury he sustained at the beginning on Training Camp and flared up shortly before the season started.

Retired Steelers quarterback and future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger believes even when Wilson is healthy, Fields should still be the starter for the team.

“If Russ is healthy, I’m sticking with Justin,” said Roethlisberger on the latest edition of his Footbahlin podcast.

Roethlisberger says that different from what he said the week before, but Fields’ game in Denver changed his mind.

“What I saw today, I think that he has earned and deserves the right to stay there,” added Roethlisberger.

Fields went 13-for-20 on Sunday against the Broncos for 117 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.

He also ran eight times for 27 yards, his longest was 16.

Roethlisberger says that the Steelers should “see what happens” with Fields and that the former Bears QB could be putting up more yards, but he’s protecting the football, something Head Coach Mike Tomlin loves.

"Would you like to see 400 yards and three touchdowns and one rushing touchdown? Of course, you would," Roethlisberger said on Footbahlin. "But you know what else you're going to be happy with? You'll be happy with a guy right now that wasn't even really supposed to probably start this year, going 2-0, taking care of the football, making plays, sometimes out of nothing when guys are getting in."
