Demi Lovato Explains Why 'Aging' Causes Her 'Existential Dread'

Demi Lovato is opening up about their fears of aging — and it's not for the reasons you may expect.

The "Confident" singer , who uses she/they pronouns and celebrated their 32nd birthday last month, spoke to People about how thoughts of aging can often cause feelings of anxiety and "dread" if she ruminates "too hard" on the subject, and not because of any fears about how getting older may affect her appearance.

"Aging is something that, if I think too hard about it, I can get anxiety about — not because I'm worried about how I look or the changes in my body or my face, but because of that existential dread," Lovato said, adding, "I like to stay in the present moment. When we think about things that are in our past or things that are in our future, we're not present, and presence is the biggest gift that we can give ourselves."

One of the biggest gifts Lovato has been given is their relationship with fiancé Jordan "Jutes" Lutes . At the premiere of her directorial debut documentary Child Star , the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer raved about her love and how she has "waited [her] whole life" for a supportive partner like him.

"It's very grounding to have a partner that is so supportive, so loving, so caring," Lovato said. "And so, you know, it's very easy to stay centered with him because I just — I love him so much and he treats me so amazing."

Lovato and Jutes, who met in a writing session , confirmed their relationship in August 2022 and got engaged in December 2023. They shared the exciting news that left them "speechless" alongside a photo of their gorgeous engagement ring .
