The New York Giants fell to the Washington Commanders 21-18 in Week 2 , with defensive struggles overshadowing a strong offensive showing. The Giants' defense surrendered 425 total yards, allowing the Commanders to control the tempo and capitalize on key moments.

Washington's offense utilized diverse personnel groupings, including 11 and 12 personnel, to challenge New York's defense. The Giants gave up 69 offensive plays and 22 first downs, including eight rushing and 12 passing. Struggling to contain the run, the Giants allowed the Commanders to average 6.2 yards per play and secure eight rushing first downs, creating consistent pressure on the defense.

The Commanders, led by quarterback Jayden Daniels, used a balanced attack that kept the Giants on their heels. Daniels’ dual-threat capability and effective use of zone-read plays and quarterback runs exposed New York's defense, which struggled to adjust to Washington’s quick pace and varied formations. The Giants' linebackers frequently found themselves out of position, overcommitting to the run, and leaving gaps that the Commanders exploited.

New York’s third-down defense was also an issue, allowing the Commanders to convert 60% of their attempts. The Commanders gained 86 rushing yards on third downs, often finding favorable or manageable situations due to New York’s inability to push them into long-yardage downs.

Despite these struggles, the Giants' defense managed to hold Washington to field goals on all seven of their red-zone opportunities, keeping the game within reach. However, the inability to force more difficult third-down situations and create pressure limited their ability to stop the Commanders' drives consistently.

Heading into Week 3, the Giants must improve their defensive performance, particularly in containing the run and tightening up on third downs. Enhanced discipline and more effective execution from the linebackers and defensive line will be essential to avoid a repeat of their Week 2 struggles against future opponents.
