A fight over bike lanes got heated at Monday night’s West Hollywood City Council meeting.

Multiple residents spoke out in favor of the city’s plan to create protected bike lanes on Fountain Ave.

“I’ve nearly been hit by cars on both Gardner and Fountain Ave., but these bikes lanes are not just for me,” one man said. “They are for the many residents that want to get around town by bike, but don’t feel comfortable or safe doing so now.”

But others questioned whether the road changes would actually encourage more drivers to switch to bikes.

“Anyone who thinks that disrupting traffic on Fountain will cause more people to miraculously give up their cars and ride bicycles may have been spending too much time at our numerous cannabis cafes,” a resident said.

In the end, the council voted 3-2 to accept a multimillion-dollar grant to fund the new bike lanes.
