Boston Red Sox legend Fred Lynn went on X today and told fans to keep hope that the Sox make the playoffs, as they have beaten the odds in the past. He referenced his 1978 Sox team, who won nine games in a row to force a playoff against the New York Yankees.

This Sox team, however, has a much harder challenge. The Red Sox are third in the race for the last Wildcard spot, four games behind the Minnesota Twins. They are also behind the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, who are one and a half games and two games back respectively.

The Sox have 12 games left in their season, so it looks like they need to play the best baseball of their life, and get lucky as well that the Tigers and Mariners start losing as well.

The Tigers have six games against the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles, the top two Wildcards and overall powerhouses. The Mariners have six games against the Yankees and the Houston Astros, who are also divisional leaders and powerhouses.

The Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays in two series, one away and one at home, one series against Minnesota, which is crucial to win or sweep, and one series against the Toronto Blue Jays. If the Sox actually play how they were playing before the All-Star Break, Lynn actually may be right; they have a shot.
