Alabama EDGE could have a similar NFL Draft rise as Jacksonville Jaguars standout Travon Walker

If you think back to the 2022 recruiting class, the Texas A&M Aggies put together a ridiculous defensive line group, which unfortunately didn’t end up working out in College Station. Due to a coaching change, and other outside factors, that group wasn’t able to stay together for long. Several of those players have been making huge strides after transferring, including current Alabama standout LT Overton .

After just 48 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and a sack during his Aggie career, we saw the flashes this past week that made Overton a five-star recruit coming out of Milton High School in the state of Georgia. In the box score, Overton had a good game against Wisconsin, including six total tackles, one tackle for loss, and a sack.

That’s a good game on paper, but honestly, Overton was even better than those numbers would indicate. At 6-5 and 283 pounds, Overton is a very freaky athlete. He has the size, length, and athleticism to play a variety of alignments in both even and odd man fronts. That skill set is pretty tantalizing.

For a bigger defensive lineman, Overton has an impressive get off of the line. He has the linear explosiveness to get offensive tackles to open up their shoulders, allowing for some inside counters off of his initial rush. His length can also be overwhelming for opposing offensive tackles, especially when he can get inside of their frames.

Alabama did a good job moving Overton around a bit, and also reducing down his alignments at times as well. There is going to be some debate about what position Overton should play, and the answer is yes. Whether you need him as an even front end, or in an odd front, he’s a weapon. His length and power should allow him to be a major asset in the run game.

The scary part is we are just getting our first taste of how good Overton can be. He is very much still a work in progress technically, but the athleticism and physical profile is impressive. You can see reps where he gets stuck on blocks and doesn’t efficiently disengage. Even in those instances, Overton still plays with power and brings a big motor.

The closing speed he possesses for a player his size is impressive. Overton can really, really close ground quickly. We have no idea if Overton ends up being a part of the 2025 NFL Draft class, but if last Saturday was any indication, you shouldn’t count it out. He’s that talented.

If Overton does end up being in the class, assuming he takes a step forward, there is a reality where he could play himself into the first round. In a lot of ways, his game is reminiscent of former Georgia and current Jacksonville Jaguar defensive end Travon Walker .

The upside is certainly there. Maybe he won’t end up being the No. 1 overall draft selection, but eventually being near the top of the class wouldn’t be much of a shock. Overton is that physically gifted, and he is starting to figure it out.
