Sweden’s government announced a significant change in immigration policy, offering up to $34,000 to immigrants who voluntarily return to their home countries starting in 2026. The new policy aims to address integration challenges and is part of a broader strategy to reform Sweden’s migration policies.

“The government is intensifying its efforts to reduce, in full compliance with Sweden’s international commitments, the number of migrants coming irregularly to Sweden,” the country’s official website said .

The country’s conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson came to power in 2022, vowing to address immigration and crime.

Sweden, once hailed as a "humanitarian superpower," is now grappling with unprecedented challenges that have strained its social fabric. During the migration crisis in Europe, Sweden took in 160,000 asylum-seekers in 2015, the highest per capita in the EU.

Sweden reports the highest rate of gang-related homicides in Europe, with suburban areas designated as "particularly vulnerable zones" where law enforcement faces significant obstacles.

The country now has the lowest average age among serious offenders in Europe, with minors as young as 13 implicated in murder cases.

The new policy aligns with a growing trend across Europe, where nations are adopting stricter immigration stances.

Critics argue that the policy is unlikely to address root causes or significantly alter the situation for those considering leaving Sweden.

Human rights organizations warn that stricter immigration policies create an environment of uncertainty for migrants, making them more vulnerable to crime and less likely to find formal work.
