Macomb County Sheriff’s deputy climbs into moving pickup truck to help 63-year-old driver having medical episode

MT CLEMENS (WWJ) A Macomb County Sheriff’s deputy is being hailed a hero for climbing into a moving pickup truck to help a driver who was having a medical episode in Mt. Clemens.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to Gratiot for a silver GMC Sierra “driving erratically” near Church Street, in the area of the Mt. Clemens Middle/High School, on Thursday (9/12) around 2:18 p.m. Deputies found the vehicle on southbound Gratiot, near Remick—and activated their lights and sirens.

The driver, 63, failed to stop and kept driving southbound, at approximately five miles per hour.

“Deputies pulled alongside the driver, who appeared to be in a daze, unable to comprehend the requests,” the press release from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said. “Eventually the driver of the truck rolled down his window and briefly hit his breaks.”

Deputy Miron— crawled out of the passenger seat of the patrol car through a window— and entered the truck while both vehicles were still moving on Gratiot. Once inside the truck, she stopped it. She called the man’s family and confirmed his medical condition.

The Clinton Township Fire Department came to the scene and treated the driver, before taking him to a nearby hospital for further treatment. His current condition was not released.

“I commend Deputy Miron for putting herself in harm’s way to help a citizen in need and protect other drivers on the roadway,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said in the release. “Due to her quick thinking and selfless actions, she safely ended what could have been a tragic situation.”
