SAN RAMON – Motorists in the East Bay should prepare for a full weekend closure of southbound Interstate 680 (I-680) between Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon and the I-580/I-680 connector in Pleasanton, starting Friday, September 20, through Monday morning, September 23, 2024. The closure will take place from 9 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday.

The closure is part of a major road improvement project by Caltrans to replace deteriorating pavement on the heavily trafficked stretch of I-680. While all I-580/I-680 connectors will remain open through right-most lanes on southbound I-680, Caltrans encourages motorists to take alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion in the work zone.

In addition to the full closure of southbound I-680, the far-left lane (Express Lane) and left shoulder on northbound I-680 between Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon will also be closed during the weekend.

The project is expected to enhance motorist safety, repair damaged pavement, and reduce the need for multiple nightly closures. This full weekend shutdown allows for the completion of work that would otherwise require approximately 40 nighttime closures.

Two additional partial weekend closures of southbound I-680 are scheduled for October 4-7 and October 18-21, 2024, allowing limited access through the construction zone.

In the event of rain or unforeseen conditions, the closure may be rescheduled. Detours will be in place to guide motorists around the closure, and California Highway Patrol officers will assist with traffic flow.
