MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The City of Midland recently approved to lower its tax rates, keeping its rates among the lowest in the region and state.

On Tuesday, the Midland City Council voted to approve the budget and tax rates to keep up with the community’s growth while lowering the tax rate for the second-straight year.

The City of Midland said the General Fund will increase to $176.339 million this year, including more than 55 percent to “set the standard for a safe and secure city.” The proposed budget also calls for $25 million to “strengthen and sustain infrastructure.” The City added that more than half of the general fund increase is for cost-of-living adjustments and pay progression for city staff.

The tax rate, which is 34.8862 cents per $100 valuation, calls for a two-year reduction of “64 tax basis points” and means an annual property tax payment of $1,045.99 on a home valued at $300,000, according to the City of Midland. In 2024, the City of Midland’s tax payment was 23 percent of the average total property tax bill, trailing Midland ISD by 36 percentage points.

Last year, Midland trailed all mid-size cities in West Texas and most peer cities across the state, according to a release from the City. The City also said the total tax bill in Midland trails all peer cities, including Abilene, Amarillo, Lubbock, San Angelo, and Odessa.
