Republican Governor Says Attacks on Migrants by Trump and Vance Are ‘Very Hurtful’

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine criticized former President Donald Trump and JD Vance’s rhetoric about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio on Tuesday, calling it “very hurtful.”

Asked by NewsNation host Chris Cuomo about the claims that Haitian migrants had been stealing and eating pets from the local community, DeWine said, “The mayor says there’s no evidence, chief of police says there’s no evidence, city manager says there was no evidence, there’s no evidence. There’s no evidence of this at all.”

Cuomo then asked, “What is your message to JD Vance and former President Trump? You support them as the Republican ticket. What is your advice to them about what to do with these allegations, about eating pets in Springfield that they keep repeating?”

DeWine replied, “They’re very hurtful. It’s very hurtful to people, hurtful to people in Springfield, hurtful to the Haitians who are working every day.”

The governor then told Cuomo that he had had some of the employers of the Haitians “over for breakfast the other day,” who told him that the migrants “work very hard, they’re very focused, they’re family-oriented,” and that “it’s hurtful for them, very, very much, and some of them are afraid.”

He concluded, “I don’t really tell people how to run a campaign, I just think that the border is a huge issue. It’s a very legitimate issue. It’s something where I think the Biden administration has not done well and has failed, and I think talking about that makes a lot of sense, and I think that people want to hear about that, but this whole thing about eating dogs and cats and, you know, that’s just– it’s very hurtful, it’s not helpful, not helpful to the people in Springfield.”
