MAHOPAC, N.Y. — Mahopac resident Liam Bergerson—who attended Mahopac Middle School and Fulmar Road Elementary School and now goes to Regis High School in NYC—is a 2025 National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.

Bergerson earned a perfect score on the PSAT, the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, taken during his junior year. Now a senior at Regis, a prestigious, private all-boys Jesuit school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Bergerson said his early start in the Mahopac Central School District gave him a “foundation that will last a lifetime.”

While a student in Mahopac schools, Bergerson was able to tap into his interest in science, placing first in the Mahopac Middle School Science Fair during both his seventh and eighth-grade years. He examined the effects of Wi-Fi radiation on the development of Artemia franciscana , a species of brine shrimp, from the cyst stage to adulthood. He also placed first in the Tri County Science and Technology Fair and advanced to the Broadcom MASTERS, a national science competition for middle school students.

“I was able to join the middle school STEAM fair, helping me realize a passion for research that I’ve pursued in high school and hope to continue in college,” Bergerson said.

Though Bergerson is no longer a Mahopac student, he is still an active member of the community. He co-founded a lawn business, called J&L Home and Yard Services, providing lawn care services across the area, and has volunteered with the Mahopac Special Education Parent/Teacher Organization (SEPTO). He also spends time tutoring Mahopac Middle School students in math.

“With incredible teachers and a sea of programs, there’s something for everyone in Mahopac,” Bergerson said.

Bergerson has carried the passions and interests he developed in Mahopac to Regis, where has earned several academic honors, including General Excellence (based on the opinion of the faculty, given to students who demonstrate an extraordinary level of interest, initiative, and achievement in and beyond the classroom) and order of  Order of the Owl (given to students who achieved all honors in academic coursework) for  2022, 2023, and 2024.

He’s currently involved with a science research project studying the effects of the inlet angle on a two-dimensional Ramjet and writing a neural network simulation. Additionally, in 2023 and 2024, he participated in the High School Engineering Program at the GE Aerospace company, Innovering.

His involvement doesn’t stop there. Bergerson is a volunteer tutor at Mt. Carmel Holy Rosary’s after-school program in Harlem. In athletics, he volunteers as a coach and referee for WestPut Setanta, a Gaelic Football sports club based in Somers, and has previously volunteered with the youth soccer club, Mahopac Mayhe m FC.
