AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca admitted his side was deservedly beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday. Ibrahima Konate , Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai all got on the scoresheet for Arne Slot .

"We played against Liverpool , who are a great team," Fonseca told Sky Italia post-match. "We started the game well. Then, they had a chance on the counter-attack and scored two goals from set pieces that changed the game and our mental balance."

USMNT star Christian Pulisic had fired the Serie A giant in front but Liverpool soon regained control. The Reds were in front by half-time thanks to two powerful headers from close range and never looked in particular danger.

"In these types of games, it’s the details that make the difference. You can’t make mistakes," Fonseca continued. "I think Liverpool are more of a team than us and they showed it. We have to work to have continuity. After the second goal was conceded, the team never played. So, it’s difficult."

"We still make too many mistakes," Fonseca admitted. "In the one-against-one, in the individual game, and in other phases, we have had a very bad time. Especially trying to tackle Mohamed Salah , trying to limit his movements. Salah and other players are the most difficult players to [stop]."

Liverpool.com says: AC Milan is a big name but the team at the moment is limited. That is not to play down the achievement of Liverpool in going to Italy and winning with relative ease but it does highlight the gulf between the Premier League and the rest of the top European leagues at the moment.

Liverpool will face bigger tests in the Champions League this season but that was the perfect start to the new campaign. Finishing inside the top eight spots will be vital and the Reds should be more than capable of doing exactly that. Next up: Bologna.
