Investigation underway after inmate dies at Moose Lake prison

A 39-year-old man incarcerated at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Moose Lake died Tuesday, authorities said.

In a news release Wednesday, the Minnesota Department of Corrections said its investigating the man's death in coordination with the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the man, nor indicated what might've caused his death.

According to the DOC, corrections staff went to the man's cell around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday and discovered him unresponsive after being alerted to the situation by his cellmate.

Life-saving measures were attempted, but the man was ultimately pronounced dead.

According to the DOC, just over 1,000 men are currently incarcerated at the medium-security prison in Moose Lake.
