Proposed 3-Team Blockbuster Trade Sends Matthew Stafford to Dolphins

After suffering his third documented concussion with the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains sidelined indefinitely. The Dolphins, with their playoff-ready roster, have committed to starting Skylar Thompson in his absence.

The veteran backup's limited NFL track record leaves more questions than answers as NFL pundits continue to dream up scenarios for Miami to improve its situation in 2024 — particularly after the Carolina Panthers benched 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young.

During Wednesday's September 18 episode of FS1's "The Facility," former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel revealed a blockbuster three-team trade proposal that would send Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford to Miami.

"I think that the Dolphins should not go after Bryce Young; I think the Dolphins should go after Matthew Stafford," Daniel said, drawing a lively reaction from his co-hosts.

Daniel's full scenario, which centered around the premise that the Rams may struggle to contend in 2024 after early injuries to Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua and others, included:

▪️ Dolphins receive: QB Matthew Stafford

▪️ Rams receive: QB Bryce Young

▪️ Carolina Panthers receive: Dolphins second-round pick, Rams third-round pick

"At the end of the day, I just think this makes a lot of sense because it's going to tell you ... how serious the Miami Dolphins are about the team that they have," Daniel added. "Are they serious about winning? If you're serious about winning, this makes sense. Matthew Stafford is only owed $4 million (guaranteed) dollars after this year."

Stafford, now 36 years old and in his 16th NFL season, signed a four-year, $160 million extension with LA in March 2022. According to Spotrac , he carries a base salary of $27 million in 2025 and $26 million in 2026, as well as a $53.6 million overall cap hit in both years.

A post-June 1 trade this year would save the Rams $23.5 million off their 2024 salary cap number but would bring with it a $45.3 million dead cap hit in 2025, per Spotrac.
