Thousands of boxes of waffles sold at Costco stores in 13 states are being recalled because they could contain plastic.

The recall involves 40-count boxes of Kodiak Protein-Packed Power Waffles, Buttermilk & Vanilla sold primarily in Midwestern Costco locations between July 15 and August 25.

The recall was initiated by the manufacturer, Utah-based Kodiak Cakes, on August 26 due to the potential presence of soft plastic film in the waffles, which could cause health complications if eaten. Costco members known to have purchased the items were notified by a letter .

"While no injuries or illnesses have been reported, we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution," the company said. "The quality, safety and integrity of our products is our number one priority at Kodiak."

The Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as "Class II" on September 13, according to an enforcement notice . The designation means the products may cause adverse health consequences, with a low chance of causing serious harm or death.

The recall includes approximately 7,300 boxes of waffles sold in the following states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Kodiak Cakes said the recall only impacts products with the lot code 24193-WL4 and a time stamp of 12:00-23:00. The recalled items have a use by date of 01/10/26.

Recalled waffles should be thrown out or returned to Costco for a full refund.
