"Inappropriate relationship" between school employee, student under investigation

SEBASTIAN — Law enforcement and Indian River County school district officials are investigating allegations of an "inappropriate relationship" between a school district employee and student.

The employee, who worked at Sebastian River High and Sebastian River Middle schools, was immediately placed on administrative leave, according to an automated message sent Wednesday to families and staff at both schools. Sebastian River Middle School's message said the student did not attend the middle school.

Details of the allegations and the employee were unavailable. District spokeswoman Cristen Maddux said in an email that because this is an open investigation with Indian River County Sheriff's Office, details were unavailable.

Indian River County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Kevin Jaworksi also said he was unable to provide details.

"I can only confirm that there is an investigation going on," Jaworksi said. "It is an ongoing investigation."

He said the Sheriff's Office has been working with the School Board since the allegations were made.

No arrests have been made, he said.

The investigation was initiated by the Department of Children and Families Services, the automated message said. Based on initial findings, the superintendent has directed staff to initiate the termination process, the message said.

"The school district has a zero-tolerance policy for employee misconduct of any kind, especially involving our students," the message said.
