INDIANAPOLIS – An inmate who attacked a deputy at the Marion County Adult Detention Center could face charges in connection with the incident.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, two deputies were conducting an inmate count around 3 p.m. Thursday when one of the inmates—identified as Jamond Harris—didn’t comply when deputies told inmates to return to their cells.

That led to a “verbal altercation,” the sheriff’s office said, and a deputy deployed her department-issued pepper spray. Harris escalated the situation and punched the deputy. He eventually knocked her to the ground and continued to attack her until other deputies responded.

The deputy was taken to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Harris was placed in administrative lockdown after the attack. He is currently being held on charges of robbery, dealing narcotics and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, according to jail records.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make a final charging decision.

The sheriff’s office released a statement about the encounter:

This incident highlights the very real dangers that our correctional staff face every day. These dedicated professionals work tirelessly to maintain order and safety in environments where tensions can escalate without warning. The bravery and quick actions of our deputies prevented a dangerous situation from worsening. We are extremely grateful for their service, and the community should recognize the vital role they play in ensuring safety within our facility and community at large.
