LOS ANGELES, CA — A routine lottery purchase turned into a life-changing moment for Southern California residents as several lottery players claimed millions in prizes in recent months. Among the largest winners was Hyo Suk Jang, who secured the $20 million SuperLotto Plus jackpot with a ticket purchased in South Los Angeles.

Jang’s winning numbers, drawn on February 3, were bought at Y & Y Market in the Historic South-Central neighborhood of Los Angeles. While the announcement came recently, this monumental win continues a streak of lucky Californians hitting the jackpot in the state’s popular lottery games.

    A Season of Millionaires

Jang wasn’t the only person in Southern California to strike gold. Sok Ban Ngeap picked up a $2 million-winning Powerball ticket from Thirst Quencher Liquor in Burbank. Remarkably, that winning ticket dates back to Christmas Day 2023, bringing unexpected joy almost a year later.

The good fortune didn’t stop there. Steve Butkus of San Dimas claimed over $1.6 million in the April 3 Powerball drawing, purchasing his ticket from an Albertsons grocery store. Similarly, Amalia Navarro took home over a million dollars ($1.05 million) from a Mega Millions ticket purchased in Van Nuys’ D & K Liquor during the March 26 drawing.

    Scratchers Players Hit Big

In addition to traditional lottery draws, several scratcher players also joined the millionaires’ club. Oscar Melendez of Long Beach secured a $5 million grand prize after purchasing a Year of Fortune Scratcher at a 7-Eleven on Atlantic Avenue. Meanwhile, Jose Luis Torres replicated that $5 million success with a scratcher ticket purchased in Nipomo, located in San Luis Obispo County.

Perhaps the most heartfelt win came from Annette Lopez, a regular lottery player who faced years of friendly teasing about her lottery habits. Her perseverance paid off during a Mother’s Day shopping trip, when she won $1 million on a Power 10’s Scratchers game bought at Save Mart in Merced.

“I wasn’t sure at first if I had won,” Lopez shared. “I had to grab my glasses, and when I looked again, I started tripping out. It was the best Mother’s Day.”

Despite her million-dollar win, Lopez remains humble. After years of skepticism from her friends and family, she takes satisfaction in proving the naysayers wrong—without gloating too much.

    Winners Pay It Forward

California Lottery winners, like Lopez, not only gain life-changing financial rewards but also contribute to the community. Under California Lottery regulations, a portion of ticket sales goes to state education, while retailers who sell winning tickets receive a modest bonus. Moreover, winners are required to pay state and federal taxes on their earnings, ensuring a broader benefit from these massive payouts.

As more Californians try their luck, the lottery continues to produce astonishing stories of everyday people whose lives are transformed overnight. For those waiting to see if they’ll be next, the hope for another life-altering win grows with every ticket sold.
